Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day!

Today is a great day to celebrate and take pride in Indigenous identity. Why not join a community event in your neighborhood? We’ve listed a few below!

  1. Burnaby: Celebrations at Civic Square from 3 - 7pm, featuring an Indigenous artisans market, family activities and performers.

  2. New Westminster: Celebrations at Moody Park from 9:30am - 2:30pm, featuring cultural entertainment for all ages, arts and crafts, Indigenous vendors and storytelling.

  3. Surrey: Celebrations at the Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre in Cloverdale from 3 - 7pm, hosted by Semiahmoo, Kwantlen and Katzie First Nations.

  4. Courtenay/Comox: Celebrations from 2pm - 9pm at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds, with performers, vendors, cultural activities for all ages, and nature walks!

  5. Other events across the BC Lower Mainland (Vancouver to Chilliwack): National Indigenous Peoples Day in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland

It’s also a good day to learn more about the diverse cultures and voices of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. To test your knowledge and get inspired to learn more, try out the “Ultimate National Indigenous Day Quiz” put together by SFU’s Office for Aboriginal Peoples! For younger minds, the OAP is also offering a printable children's crossword puzzle!

If you’d rather listen to some amazing Indigenous artists, CBC Music has dedicated the whole day to Indigenous musicians, songwriters and composers!

CBC TV is also showing the 2024 Indspire Awards at 4pm PDT today. Whether you’re applying for the Indspire awards (next application deadline coming up on August 1st!) or not, it’s an inspiring showcase of Indigenous excellence across the country, including 3 youth award winners! 🙂

No matter what you choose to do, we wish all ITMP students and their families a joyful day today!
